Well Built in Modern Luxury

A SEAT OF HONOR: Ann Blackwell loves Philippe Starck's Heritage Rocker by Emeco. "It's made in Pennsylvania of 80% recycled material and has a 150-year warranty," says the sustainability savant.

After five years as the studio proprietor of Georgetown's Design Within Reach outpost, Ann Blackwell took action on her interior monologue. This month, the style-savvy, Corcoran-educated, LEED-accredited design-minded guru steps out on her own to launch the District's first sustainable furniture store, Well Built, (wellbuiltspace.com). The hot shop at 1541 14th St. is adding to the booming Logan Circle design district. Blackwell is the only retailer in the city carrying De La Espada, and she stocks goods from Heller, Shine Labs and Baltimore furniture company David Edward. "Everything in the store has a good reason to be here, " she says. "Sustainability is an essential part of that definition. The name Well Built signifies that a product is smartly designed, long-lasting, exceptionally well-made with sustainable materials, functions brilliantly, and of course, looks beautiful."
